World Trade Center Controversy
I recently got into an argument with a close friend about the release of the new Oliver Stone film "World Trade Center" starring Nicolas Cage. She is under the impression that Hollywood is using a tragedy to make money. I however believe that it is a good idea to make this film, as long as it is done correctly.
I'm interested in knowing what the general public thinks. Do you think Hollywood is using 9/11 JUST to make money or is it okay for film makers to be making movies about 9/11 five years after it happened?
Let me know.

I don't think it's right to be portraying 9/11 within 5 years after the largest tragedy practically ever in U.S. history. Maybe 10 years from now especially when the youngings that witnessed it in person/on T.V. are older. It may help them understand it more. But 5 years after? I refuse to go to the theatre and see it at this time.

I think its exploitation. My friends who live downtown NYC seem to think the same.

The problem is that it already has been done correctly! Released just recently was United 93, Paul Greengrass' critically acclaimed film that was respective, reflective, and accurate.
Oliver Stone, who if you look at his recent record as a director, is trying to balance critical failure by creating a film that, no matter what - will have such a sentimental impact that even the critics will be forced to pass it off as a successful piece of filmmaking.
United 93, which received little attention when it arrived, is considered to be one of the most critically acclaimed films of the years, both by Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, websites that compile reviews and offer a calculated score as a result (check it out).
Essentially, I agree with you Mike - if done correctly, and not made by Hollywood Exec's and big Hollywood stars like Nicholas Cage, the tragedy of September 11th is a story of fallen heroes that deserves to be told, to remind the American people what we are capable of when we put partisan interests aside.
I'm also a film critic, 06' high-school graduate, who will be studying film next year in NY.

All of you that think the film is inappropriate should suck up the fact that life isn't always grand. What Hollywood is doing is not what is important. What is important is that Americans are complacent to the realities in this world. Killing thousands of people was inappropriate, not telling the story no matter how uncomfortable it is to watch. Don't like it?.....Don't watch it. I'm on the ground in Iraq and get to live the uncomfortable reality every day. People should watch it.....and remember it.
