Friday Night Movies

Sadly "A History of Violence" will not be coming to "Smittys Cinema Pub" in Sanford. However, my blog entry yesterday said that only Regal Clarks pond would be picking up this film. Two others were recently added to the list. Theaters and showtimes for "A History of violence are as follows:

Cinemagic Saco
today: 1:10, 3:15, 5:20, 7:25, 9:30

Railroad Square Cinema
today: 5:20, 7:20, 9:20

Regal Clarks Pond 8
today: 1:50, 4:30, 7:45, 10:15

My other choice would have been Serenity, but we will not be picking this film up either. This weekend my reviews will be a late review for "Just Like Heaven" starring Reese Witherspoon, and "Oliver Twist."

It's Thursday!

It's Thursday! Time for all you film fanatics to begin planning your weekend. Here is a little guide as to what is coming out this weekend in theaters.

"A History of Violence" starring Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris is about an average Joe who lives in small town USA. His friends and family think that they know him very well, but Ed Harris poses the question "Why is he so good at killing people?" when Viggo defends his small business from burglars.

HIS

This film is my personal pick for what you should see this weekend. However, I was very sad to learn that the only theater in Maine that will be picking up this film is Regal Cinema 8 in South Portland.

"Serenity" also comes out this weekend. This film is based off of the characters from the TV show "Firefly." I am not so enthused about seeing this film. I have seen the trailer for this film once and could barely tolerate sitting through it. I doubt I could sit through an hour and a half of this.

TORY

"Into the Blue" is also released this weekend and it stars Jessica Alba. I am thoroughly confused by both the trailers for this film and the trailer for "Serenity" because I cannot figure out what the film is actually about. From what I have gathered it is a film about a group of people who locate something very valuable in the ocean and these people are on a mission to retrieve it before a group of others do. I'd say this film was just made for people who are entertained by good looking people in bathing suits.

Corpse Bride: A Masterpiece

Twelve Years ago Tim Burton released his masterpiece "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Over time this film became one of the classic animated tales of our time. Now, Tim Burton has released another film using the amazing technology of Claymation. Corpse Bride can be described easily with the films tagline. "There has been a grave misunderstanding." Victor Van Dort (played by Johnny Depp) has accidentally married a dead woman. Strange? Yes. Creepy? Yes. Does it work as a film? Yes. Tim Burton is only film maker who can take this gruesome a topic for a film and make a delightful family film.

A word of warning for Burton fans:

This film is NOT as good as “Nightmare.” This isn’t to say the film isn’t amazing, but do not expect Corpse Bride to live up to “Nightmare.”

The soundtrack is amazing, yet there are not as many classic songs, and the characters in the film are not as memorable or quirky as those in "Nightmare."

Both are as amazing as the other. In fact, Corpse Bride does triumph over “Nightmare” in one way. The claymation in “Bride” is so detailed it makes some of “Nightmare’s” animation seem sketchy.

That said “Corpse Bride” is an amazing movie that I'm sure will go down with "Nightmare" as a classic Claymation Masterpiece.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

“The Exorcism of Emily Rose” is the new thriller based on the last exorcism that was performed. This exorcism leads to Emily Rose’s death. When the priest who performed the exorcism is accused of homicide a workaholic lawyer takes the case to defend him. This film is definitely worth seeing; however do not listen to the reviews that say it is scarier than “The Exorcist” or “The Omen.”

This is untrue. The film is actually a very interesting court film with a few creepy curve balls thrown in. I would say if it compared to any film, it compares the most with “The Devils Advocate.” I would say that scary wise this film is creepy and the story line is interesting. It is probably the best thriller film of the year. Have a review for this movie? Lets hear it!

UPCOMING FILMS

The sequel to Bruce Almighty has been set and it follows Bruce’s co-worker Evan as he attempts to build an ark for the next great flood. The film stars Steve Carrell and opens in 2006. But what do you think? Will it fly or will it flop like "Dumb and Dumberer" and "Son of the Mask?" Let me know!

There are only two weeks left until the great films of the year begins pouring into box offices. Starting next week with “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (which I am looking very forward to), the long awaited film "Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit,” and the fourth installment of the Harry Potter films is due in theaters this November. Two films I cannot wait for are “Fun with Dick and Jane” starring Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni and “The Producers” starring Nathan Lane, Matthew Brodrick, and Will Ferrell. Did I leave anything out? Let me know what you are dying to see.

Red Eye - Late Review

Well, Ebert and Roeper do early reviews of movies, so I'm going to do a late review of a movie. Wes Craven's relatively new thriller is everything a thirller film should be. A film that you can't tear your eyes away from and makes your heart beat faster with every scene.

images.jpg

The film follows a Hotel Rservations Manager who is seated next to an assasin on a plane to Miami. This assasin needs her to help him carry out his plan or he threatens her fathers life. The greatest thing about this film is that the assasin knows what he is doing. He can't be outsmarted! Every desperate attempt she makes to break away from him is caught by his hawk's eye. It is an amazing piece of work. Much better and more believable than "The Transporter 2."

Transporter 2

Transporter 2 is not your average action movie. It is below average! Complete with terrible acting, stupid one liners, impossible stunts (and I mean IMPOSSIBLE), and a downright dissapointing ending leaving you saying "What in God's name happened?

Here's just a taste of what you will see if you decide to watch this movie.

Frank (Transporter): Your son has been infected with a deadly virus! Everyone who comes in contact with his breath will die.

Mother: Are you telling me my son is going to die?

I DON'T GET IT!!! He used the words DEADLY and DIE within the timespan of ten seconds and she doesn't understand that her son is dying!

I will admit however that this movie was better than I expected! Hear me out.

When the trailer for this film comes on TV or comes up at the movie theater I use it as an excuse to get a snack. It is downright painful to watch. i dont know why, it just is. So when I found myself being somewhat entertained by the cool stunts this movie had to offer, I felt happy I didn't entirely waste my money.

If I were you (and I'm not, so who am I to tell you what to do?), I wouldn't see this movie. I'd check out my list of best movies for the summer and pick from those.
